Electrical guides you can watch.
Short video walkthroughs of the electrical checks and fixes every homeowner should know. Each guide comes with step-by-step instructions and a clear line on when to stop and call a pro.
What electrical maintenance can you do yourself?
Test your GFCI outlets monthly
GFCIs save lives. They only work if they work.
Replace a simple wall outlet
One of the more approachable DIY electrical jobs — if you respect the power.
Test smoke and CO detectors
California code requires interconnected detectors. Monthly testing keeps them working.
Identify your electrical panel brand
Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Challenger panels are documented fire hazards. Find out what you have.
When should you stop and call a licensed electrician?
Six signs that the problem is past DIY. Shut the circuit off at the breaker, keep everyone clear, and pick up the phone.
- Burning plastic smell from an outlet, switch, or panel
A melted connection is arcing. Live fire risk. Shut off power at the main breaker and call immediately.
- Warm or discolored outlet faceplates
Loose or overloaded wiring heating up. Turn off the circuit and stop using the outlet.
- Sparks when plugging in a device (every time)
Small spark occasionally is normal. Big spark or repeated arcing is a worn outlet or short — replace before it fails hot.
- Lights dim when the AC or appliances kick on
Sign of an undersized or overloaded panel. Common in homes upgrading from 100A to 200A service.
- Buzzing from the breaker panel
Loose bus bar or arcing behind the breakers. Cut power and call — do not open the cover yourself.
- Repeated GFCI or AFCI tripping with nothing plugged in
Usually a ground fault in the wiring behind the outlet. Needs a meter to diagnose.
