Replace a simple wall outlet

One of the more approachable DIY electrical jobs — if you respect the power.

What you'll learn

  • How to kill power at the breaker AND verify with a tester
  • Hot / neutral / ground — which wire goes where
  • The right way to wrap wires around terminal screws (skip backstab)
  • Warning signs that mean stop and call a pro

Step by step

  1. Turn off the breaker for that outlet.
  2. Test with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything.
  3. Remove faceplate and outlet. Take a photo of the wiring.
  4. Transfer wires one at a time to the new outlet (brass = hot, silver = neutral, green = ground).
  5. Screw outlet back, faceplate on, breaker back on, test.
Safety note

Stop if you find aluminum wiring, backstab-only connections, multiple wires on one screw, or any charring. Those need a licensed electrician.
