Test smoke and CO detectors

California code requires interconnected detectors. Monthly testing keeps them working.

What you'll learn

  • Why California now requires interconnected alarms in every bedroom
  • The 30-second monthly test routine
  • 10-year replacement rule (check the manufacturing date)
  • What the different chirp patterns actually mean

Step by step

  1. Press the TEST button on each alarm — it should beep loudly within a second.
  2. Interconnected alarms should ALL beep when one is tested.
  3. Check the manufacturing date on the back. Over 10 years old? Replace.
  4. Replace 9V batteries annually; sealed 10-year lithium units don't need battery changes.
Safety note

Intermittent chirping (once per minute) means low battery OR end-of-life. Don't just pull the battery — that 30 seconds of silence isn't worth your family.
