A Ford F-150 Lightning charges at home on more than one kind of equipment. A standard J1772 Level 2 charger (including Ford’s Connected Charge Station) will charge the truck. Ford’s Charge Station Pro is a different product: Ford lists it at up to 80 amps / 19.2 kW and as the home charger used with automatic Home Backup Power. Installed cost for a heavy 80-amp circuit in San Diego commonly lands in the $1,200-$3,500+ range before any panel or subpanel work, which is priced separately. Confirm current Ford hardware, connector type, and backup eligibility on Ford’s owner pages before you buy a wall unit.

TL;DR

  • The Lightning charges on J1772 Level 2 equipment. That is a normal dedicated EV circuit sized to the charger nameplate and adopted code, not automatically an 80-amp job.
  • Ford lists the Charge Station Pro at up to 80A (19.2 kW). Ford’s Home Backup Power pages currently say that unit is required for automatic backup and that it is no longer for sale. Verify stock and connector (CCS1 vs J1772) with Ford before planning the circuit.
  • Automatic Home Backup Power, per Ford, is for 2022-2025 Lightning models and needs the Charge Station Pro plus a Sunrun Home Integration System. Software activation is separate and differs for extended-range vs standard-range batteries.
  • An 80-amp continuous EV load is often paired with a 100-amp breaker under the NEC 125% continuous-load rule. The electrician sizes the breaker and conductors from the install spec, the nameplate, and the adopted code, not from this article.
  • Panel space, a subpanel, or a service change are onsite load-calculation decisions. City of San Diego electrical permits are required for EV charging in a private garage unless a listed exemption applies. Other cities and the County run their own counters.

Charge the truck first, then decide if you need Ford’s 80-amp unit

Most Level 2 home chargers in this county sit well below 80 amps. If you only need overnight charging, a Ford Connected Charge Station or another J1772-compatible wall unit is the usual path. Ford’s own charger FAQ notes that the Mobile Power Cord and Connected Charge Station use J1772, and that the Charge Station Pro uses CCS1.

Do not treat “fastest home charging on the market” as a fact. Other 80-amp equipment exists, and Ford’s current retail lineup for home backup hardware has changed. Read What Ford home charger do I need? and Home Backup Power before you lock a circuit size.

If you are still comparing Level 1 overnight charging to Level 2, see Level 1 vs. Level 2 EV charger.

What it costs in San Diego (prices parked)

Charge Station Pro-class 80-amp installs commonly run $1,200 to $3,500 and up before panel or subpanel work is counted separately. Drivers:

  • Panel capacity. If the main panel cannot support the calculated EV load next to existing loads, a subpanel ($600-$1,200 installed on this site’s published ranges) or a panel upgrade is a separate scope.
  • Conductors and conduit. Larger continuous loads need heavier copper. Gauge follows the calculated ampacity and the run length, not a single countywide recipe.
  • Run length. A detached garage can add conduit and, sometimes, trenching.
  • Load calculation. An 80-amp ask needs a real calc. It is not optional padding.

For brand-agnostic EV pricing context, see EV charger installation cost.

Panel, subpanel, or leave the service alone

A load calculation shows whether there is room for the charger setting you actually use. Many San Diego houses, especially pre-2000 stock, do not have 80-100 amps of unused headroom. Clairemont, Rancho Bernardo, and older west Chula Vista are qualitative examples of that stock. This page does not publish a housing-age percent for those neighborhoods.

When there is room, a subpanel dedicated to the charger can sometimes avoid a service change. When there is not, the main service may need to move. That is a separate permit and price. See EV panel upgrade bottleneck.

Not every Lightning install requires a new circuit. City of San Diego materials treat some garage EV work as a Simple / no-plan permit route, which still means a permit. Do not assume every charger needs a new homerun until the electrician and the nameplate say so.

Home Backup Power is extra hardware, not a charger setting

Ford’s automatic Home Backup Power uses bidirectional flow from the Lightning through a Charge Station Pro and a Home Integration System sold through Sunrun. Ford currently lists compatibility for 2022-2025 Lightning models. Extended-range trucks include software activation; standard-range trucks may need a one-time activation purchase. Ford also describes a different GenerLink path for Pro Power Onboard essential backup. None of that is “the same job as hanging a wall charger.”

Ford’s owner pages currently state the Charge Station Pro required for automatic backup is no longer for sale. Treat availability, remaining dealer stock, and any successor product as something to confirm with Ford and Sunrun, not with this article.

PSPS shutoffs happen in this county. This page does not state how long they last or which fire-zone class your lot sits in.

Permits in San Diego County

Electrical installation, alteration, and replacement in the City of San Diego generally need an electrical permit unless SDMC 129.0303 exempts the work. Garage EV charging is on the City’s Simple permit examples when it meets that program’s rules. A service or panel change is a different review. Unincorporated county, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, and other cities issue their own permits. Bright Pro Electric does not pull permits. The licensed contractor or, where the jurisdiction allows, the owner/lessee does.

Rebate eligibility is its own paperwork. See EV charger rebates and EV charger permit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a Ford Charge Station Pro in San Diego?

Commonly $1,200 to $3,500 or more before panel work, because an 80-amp circuit is larger than a typical 40-48 A Level 2 circuit. If a subpanel or full panel upgrade is required, add the published ranges on this site for that separate scope.

Does the Ford F-150 Lightning come with the Charge Station Pro?

Do not assume the truck includes that wall unit. Ford’s current owner pages treat Charge Station Pro as a specific product, and they currently say it is no longer for sale for automatic backup. Read the window sticker and Ford’s charger pages for your model year. Extended-range vs standard-range differences that Ford publishes today are about backup software activation, not a guaranteed hardware crate in the bed.

Why do people talk about a 100-amp breaker for an 80-amp charger?

NEC rules treat many EVSE loads as continuous and size the overcurrent device at 125% of that load. An 80-amp continuous setting often lands on a 100-amp breaker if the product is actually installed at 80 amps. The licensed electrician follows the Ford install sheet and the code the city has adopted. If you install a lower-amp J1772 unit, the circuit follows that nameplate instead.

What is Ford Home Backup Power and does it cost extra?

Automatic backup, per Ford, needs Charge Station Pro hardware plus the Sunrun Home Integration System, and it is limited to listed model years. It is a separate scope from a standard Level 2 charger. Ask Ford/Sunrun what is still sold before you bid the electrical.

Will my panel need to be upgraded?

Only a load calculation answers that. Older 100-amp services often cannot add an 80-amp continuous load next to AC, range, and water heating. A smaller Level 2 charger may fit when the 80-amp unit will not.

When to call

Lightning charging that touches the panel, a new circuit, or backup-power integration is licensed electrical work. Bright Pro Electric matches San Diego County homeowners with independent licensed electricians. It does not install chargers, hold a C-10, or guarantee appointment times. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm. After hours, leave a message. Use the contact form.
